Mastering Work/Life Balance

Dear Friend,

Let’s face it… We’re all busy.

Managing tasks/work along with all the relationships we have is one of the hardest things about being an adult.

There are tons of concepts on “work/life balance” out there. Most say it’s a “time” issue. While learning how to manage time is certainly helpful, I actually think it’s more about mindset.

My friend Jeremie Kubicek (co-founder of GiANT and Leadercast) just released his second video in his free training series called the 5 Gears. It’s all about Work/Life balance…and how to master it.

P.S. – If you haven’t already, make sure you check out the first video in the series where he actually teaches you the 5 Gears. It’s really powerful and super easy to start implementing right away.

Video #1: The 5 Gears System

————-

Here’s what the video is all about:

In video 2, Jeremie teaches 3 brand new tools and relates them to the 5 Gears.

:: Tool 1 – Know Yourself to Lead Yourself ::

The first tool is “Know Yourself to Lead Yourself”. This tool will help people:

  • Become aware of their current reality (knowing yourself)
  • Learn how to change their reality (leading yourself)
  • Address certain actions they take (and the consequences of those actions)
  • Modify the patterns that lead to certain actions and which ones they should change
  • Identify the tendencies that are undermining their influence

:: Tool 2 – The Support/Challenge Matrix ::

The second tool is called the “Support / Challenge Matrix”. It’s all about learning how to lead in a way that helps others feel empowered, come alive, and thrive. It will help people understand your leadership tendency: do you tend to lean towards support? challenge? The best leaders learn how to do both at the appropriate time.

This is one of the most important (and powerful) tools used in leadership. The best type of leader is a “liberating leader”. This is someone who understands how to calibrate both support and challenge appropriately. The problem is that most people have a tendency towards one or the other. Some organizations are full of leaders who bring high challenge, yet offer little to no support. Other organizations have a culture where leaders bring a lot of support and “rah-rah”, but rarely bring any challenge for fear of disturbing relational harmony.

:: Tool 3 – 5 Circles of Influence ::

The final tool is called the 5 Circles of Influence. This is a clear and simple visual representation that helps us distinguish between the “circles of influence” and relationships we have in life. They include:

  1. Self
  2. Family
  3. Team
  4. Organization
  5. Community

Two major learning opportunities from this tool are:

1. Intentional is better than accidental. Most leadership, parenting, and living is accidental.

2. Just because you’re doing well in one circle of influence doesn’t mean you should stop there. The question becomes: what type of leader are you in each circle? How well are you connecting in each circle?
